Swimming Into Blue Light

The Blue Cave is a sea cave on Efate’s coast where sunlight enters through an underwater opening, illuminating the cave’s interior with an ethereal blue glow. You swim or snorkel into the cave through the entrance, and the light filtering through the water below creates a luminous blue atmosphere — the walls, the water surface, and the air itself appear to glow blue. The effect is at its strongest when the sun angle is right (typically late morning) and the water is calm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to the Blue Cave?

By boat from Port Vila or from the nearby coast. The cave is accessible only from the water — you swim or snorkel through the entrance.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable swimming in open water and entering a cave. The swim is short (approximately 10–20 metres to the interior viewing area). Life jackets are available. The guide manages the entry and the safety.
